It’s been over a decade since the first model was launched in July 2011.

Hyundai Motor Group, which includes the three car brands Hyundai, Kia and Genesis, recently surpassed the milestone of selling one million plug-in electric vehicles worldwide.

The group’s sales have reached 1.02 million as of the end of December 2022, more than a decade since its first model, the Hyundai BlueOn, was launched in South Korea in July 2011, Yonhap News Agency reported. At the time, it was a very basic all-electric car with a 16.4 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery and a range of just under 100 miles.

But the South Korean company is growing fast, developing new products, most notably the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro Electric Vehicle with 64kWh batteries and most recently a new E-GMP platform for next-generation EVs.

According to the article, by the end of 2022, cumulative sales of electric vehicles (BEVs and PHEVs as we understand them) reached:

Hyundai Motor (Hyundai and Genesis): 601,448

Kia: 420,836

Hyundai Motor Group: 1,022,284

This includes 371,838 units in 2022, a huge increase from 101,362 in 2019.

Our own data, based on the company’s wholesale shipments, is very similar, showing the group selling over 370,000 plugins in 2022:

Hyundai Motor (Hyundai and Genesis): 240,345 (up 45%) and 6.1% share
including over 194,000 BEVs

Kia: at least 132,280 (up 51% year-over-year) or 4.6% of the total volume
including over 132,000 BEVs

Hyundai Motor Group: total of at least 372,000 units
including over 326,000 BEVs

We estimate that over 800,000 (800,000-850,000) of the group’s 1 million plug-in vehicles sold since 2011 were pure electric vehicles. The rest are plug-in hybrids.

For reference, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (almost exclusively the Hyundai Nexo) have cumulatively sold more than 32,000 units.

In terms of the most popular models, the article listed the top three:

Hyundai Kona Electric: 256,907

Kia Niro e-Niro: 200,302

Hyundai Ioniq 5: 165,637

We have been unable to verify these numbers, and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 numbers almost exactly match cumulative wholesale shipments. The Hyundai Kona Electric could be even higher – closer to 290,000. The retired Hyundai Ioniq Electric reached nearly 90,000 units.

Regardless of the details, Hyundai Motor Group is expected to expand its Electric Vehicle offerings and sales, so we may not have to wait long for another million plug-in vehicles — 24 months (or by the end of 2024) should suffice.
