In recent years, Hyundai has been at the forefront of producing well-built, practical electric family cars.

Pioneering and innovative automakers must continue to push things forward or risk slipping into Electric Vehicle obscurity, which is exactly what Hyundai has done with its latest Ioniq 5 blend of hatchback and crossover .

Unlike the architecture used so far in its electric, hybrid and combustion engine models, the Ioniq 5 is Hyundai’s first vehicle to use its new Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) and serves as the foundation for the company’s next model.

The fact that its retro extra large hot hatch body hides one of the most complete family Electric Vehicles money can buy is remarkable.

Boasting an incredibly spacious interior, blazingly fast charging and up to 298 miles of range, the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 effortlessly combines great looks, poised handling, the latest technology and a standard set of safety features together.

The design was previewed by the Hyundai 45 EV concept car shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2019. Both the concept car and the production version were inspired by the Hyundai Pony, with parametric pixel design applied to the headlights, taillights and wheels. The vehicle’s clamshell hood spans the entire width and is paired with 20-inch aerodynamic wheels for a sleek look.

Developed under the project code NE, it is the first vehicle based on the E-GMP platform. A dedicated electric vehicle platform enables the vehicle to feature a full-flat interior floor and a 3-meter-long wheelbase. The flat floor allowed Hyundai engineers to develop a sliding front center console that slides 140 millimetres (5.5 inches) back. Cargo capacity behind the rear seats is 531 liters (18.8 cubic feet), which increases to nearly 1,600 liters (56.5 cubic feet) with the second-row seats folded.

The instrument panel is controlled by two 300 millimetre12in) screens, one for the instrument cluster display and the other for the infotainment system under a pane of glass. It comes with an optional head-up display with augmented reality support. Many internal components are made from recycled materials, including PET bottles. The roof consists of a large glass panel without any supporting beams.

The Ioniq 5 also comes with a front trunk, RWD versions and all North American versions have a capacity of 57 L (2.01 cu ft), while AWD models (except North America) have a capacity of 24 L (0.848 cu ft) due to the extra machinery underneath parts to support the front motor.

It has the ability to charge electrical devices through the built-in V2L (Vehicle to Load) function. It can deliver up to 3.6 kilowatts from a port mounted under the rear seats (except in Australia) and another port mounted on the outside. The external port provides power even when the vehicle is turned off.

The car is available with 58 kilowatt hour or 72.6 kilowatt hour battery capacity options, while the North American version is only available with a 58 kilowatt hour or 77.4 kilowatt hour battery. Each Ioniq 5 has a top speed of 185 km/h (115 mph).

The battery can charge 86 kilometres or 53 miles in 5 minutes, or 10% to 80% in 18 minutes, or 375 kilometres or 233 miles in half an hour, its 800 V Charging capability through the use of a 350 kilowatt charger. The 800 V inverter comes from Vitesco Technologies, a subsidiary of Continental. According to the WLTP standard, a 5-minute charge will increase its range by 100 kilometres or 62 miles.

The 45 EV concept car debuted at the 2019 Frankfurt International Motor Show in Germany; the “45” describes both the Pony coupe’s 45th anniversary and the prominent 45-degree angles on the sides of the concept. At the time, Hyundai referred to the design language as “sensual movement” and described the front and rear lights as having a “kinetic cube” theme.
