The UK electric vehicle charging network installed 106 high-speed charging stations in 2022, an increase of 80%.

There are now 295 locations across the UK with four or more high-speed charging points.

At the end of December, data from Zap-Map showed that the number of ultra-fast charging points would increase by almost 80% in 2022. These high-speed devices, for drivers who want to travel long distances and charge as quickly as possible, have increased to 2,295 from 1,290 at the end of 2021.

Zap-Map Co-founder & COO Melanie Shufflebotham said: “Over the next few years, the UK will need a mix of charging solutions to suit a wide variety of use cases.

“Focusing solely on the number of charging devices masks the different types of charging available, what they’re useful for, and which ones are needed where.”

One of these focuses is to provide charging infrastructure on the road. These devices appear on residential streets, usually slow or fast chargers, offering an alternative to charging at home.

This segment has seen significant growth through 2022, with a 36% increase in the number of roadside chargers, from 8,842 devices at the end of 2021 to 12,009 devices at the end of December.

While London and the South East hold the lead in terms of most charging points, thousands of chargers were installed across the UK in 2022.

In fact, the West Midlands was the region with the highest growth rate last year. The total number of chargers in the region increased 52% year-over-year, from 1,854 to 2,816.

Of the 2,816 chargers in the West Midlands, 223 were ultra-fast, 419 fast, 1,789 fast and 385 slow at the end of December.

Wales has also seen significant growth, with 1,039 units in operation by the end of 2021 and 1,473 units by the end of December 2022, an increase of 42%.

Despite this, the Greater London area had the highest total number of devices installed in 2022, increasing from 9,160 in 2021 to 11559 at the end of December 2022, a increase of 26%.

Zap-Map’s annual survey revealed that among Electric Vehicle drivers who also have a gasoline or diesel vehicle, electric is the preferred mode of transportation for the majority of trips.
