The teams are preparing to install new Electric Vehicle charging points at five car parks operated by Shropshire Council.

Much Wenlock, Shrewsbury and Wem will be the first towns to benefit from the pot of almost £1m awarded to Shropshire Council, which will see 271 new on-street charging points in 40 locations, including car parks.

Installations will begin this month at Falcons Court and St Mary’s Lane in Much Wenlock, Mill Street and Aston Street in Wem and Abbey Foregate in Shrewsbury.

Last year, the Office of Zero Emission Vehicles, with support from the Energy Saving Trust, allocated £902,940 to install on-street charging points for residents wishing to charge their plug-in electric vehicles.

Ian Nellins, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for climate change, environment and transport, said: “It’s fantastic to see the progress we are making with electric vehicle infrastructure in Shropshire. EVs are much better for the environment as they give off less pollution and greenhouse gases, and it’s imperative that we look at more sustainable ways to get around our large and rural county.”

The funding will go to towns that are expected to have the most plug-in vehicles on the road. The facilities will see Shropshire rise from 65th out of 375 boroughs to 11th for the number of available public charging points, or the top 3% nationally.

Councillor Nellins added: “It’s great to see more sustainable transport becoming more and more widespread in the county. It’s so important we have Electric Vehicle chargers that are accessible to everyone and not only those people with off-road parking such as driveways or garages.”

Shropshire Council is working with electric vehicle infrastructure company Connected Curb to install the chargers.

Between four and 12 additional on-street charging points are expected at 37 locations in car parks and on streets.
