In North Yorkshire, a new network of electric vehicle charging stations is being installed in rural areas after successfully securing a £2.2 million funding offer.
A proposal to build 140 charging stations across all seven boroughs and districts in the county has been approved and will be funded by a £20 million national pilot project. The money comes from government and industry. Each area will receive 20 chargers.
The decision has been particularly welcomed by drivers who don’t have off-road parking spaces and can’t charge at home.
A plan has been drawn up to make it eco-friendly by installing charging stations next to battery storage units charged by solar panels.
A technology was chosen that is also sympathetic to the rural areas where they will be installed.
Known as the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Pilot, North Yorkshire will feature residential charging points at street locations and larger petrol station-style charging stations.
As well as giving drivers who don’t have home chargers the confidence to switch to EVs, the new network will help reduce “range anxiety” for existing Electric Vehicle owners by ensuring that drivers are never far from a charging station.
Executive member for climate change, Councillor Greg White, said: “The switch to electric vehicles is necessary as North Yorkshire moves towards becoming carbon zero, but the rural nature of the county presents some significant challenges.
“We worked hard to come up with an innovative scheme which will begin to provide the answers motorists need if they are to have the confidence to go electric.
“The Government clearly saw the merit in our plans and we are delighted that we will now be able to press ahead with this work. It is an important step in our plans to ensure the county has an Electric Vehicle charging network which can meet everyone’s needs.”
