Seventy different electric cars lined the waterfront as the London to Brighton Rally arrived.

The vehicles were driven from Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens in London before arriving on Madeira Drive later in the day.

At the event, solar-powered cars, do-it-yourself builds and even electric planes all followed the route into the city.

The rally is the second to be held, following last year’s event which was described as an “unprecedented success”.

Bill Murray, the event organiser, said: “The Rally was a fantastic day and a huge success.

“We had thousands of spectators, 70 entries and fabulous events in London and at our halfway point in Crawley.

“Madeira Drive hosted everything from solar car parking, solar cars, EDF’s renewable technologies and even a flyby from a Nebo electric plane – the only one in existence in the UK.”

The London to Brighton event is the first all-electric car rally to be held in the UK, showcasing “the latest electric vehicle and solar technology” in the transport industry.

Harry Potter actor Mark Williams was among those in attendance.

Tom Druitt is chief executive of The Big Lemon Buses in Brighton, which has many electric vehicles in its fleet.

Tom, who is also the co-founder of the event, said before the event: “We now have a bigger and better event to look forward to.

“The aim of the event is to demonstrate and celebrate the rapid development of electric vehicles and renewable energy technology and have a fun day in the process.

This year’s event was held in partnership with popular YouTube channel Fully Charged, whose shows are hosted by TV star Robert Llewellyn, who has appeared in Red Dwarf and Channel 4’s Scrapheap Challenge.

The rally left London at 7am, stopped at Ifield Community College in West Sussex at 8am and ended at Madeira Drive at 10am.

Until 2:00pm, hundreds of spectators can see the vehicles on display by the sea, along with interactive booths from leading electric vehicle manufacturers, live music and exhibits, and a test track.

Next year’s event will run from London via New Haven to Brighton to Paris.
