Fuel costs have skyrocketed, with a full tank of petrol costing £100.

Rising fuel prices mean the per-mile cost of running an electric vehicle has fallen to around 80% of that of petrol and diesel models, a new analysis shows. This is because the average cost of filling a typical family car with petrol has exceeded £100 for the first time.

Green driving consultancy New AutoMotive calculates that the average annual electricity bill for a popular small electric car like the Nissan Leaf or Renault Zoe is around £250. For a petrol car with a typical fuel efficiency of 38 miles per gallon, the annual fuel cost is around £1,210 based on current fuel prices. Diesel car owners spend around £1,260 a year on fuel.

Ben Nelmes, co-founder and head of policy at New AutoMotive, said the rising cost of petrol and diesel “makes electric vehicles more attractive than ever”. He told PA News Agency: “Commuters and people living in areas with limited public transport continue to bear the brunt of the cost of living crisis as they rely on petrol and diesel vehicles.

“Meanwhile, sales of new electric cars are booming and the second-hand market is growing rapidly too, helping electric cars to become more and more affordable. This is a promising trend, but ministers must explore ways of offering targeted support to encourage Britain’s most active drivers to make the switch to electric cars.

“This would reduce emissions faster, help those hardest hit by rising fuel prices, and reduce the UK’s reliance on imported fuel.”

Demand for new electric vehicles has risen sharply in recent months. Registrations of pure electric vehicles rose 17.7% in May, while all new vehicles fell 20.6%, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Electric vehicles such as pure electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and hybrids accounted for three-tenths of new registrations last month. Cost analysis is based on a typical mileage of 7,400 miles per year.

Fuel costs are calculated using current average prices of 182.3p per litre for petrol and 188.1p per litre for diesel. Electricity costs are based on 75% of off-peak night time electricity rates and 25% of peak electricity rates, using the cheapest available electricity rate.
