South Korean automaker Kia is celebrating after the Kia EV6 wins more awards, including being named “Best Electric SUV” by U.S. News & World Report this week.

This is another award honouring Hyundai and Kia, two major brands under the Hyundai Motor Group. The latest honour for the Kia EV6 brings another win for the Hyundai Ioniq 5 as well as the group’s e-GMP platform.

Described as a “well-rounded vehicle”, the EV6 features “exciting new styling” and “a spacious interior, not to mention quiet and fast propulsion”.

The EV6 – with a local pre-sale price of $67,990 – also took home the titles of Best Affordable Electric Car and Best Electric Car.

U.S. News & World Report analyzed each vehicle’s overall rating, starting price, secondary charging rate, and EPA fuel economy and range estimates.

A total of 82 electric models were evaluated by the jury. These include pure battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid and hybrid vehicles. The judges selected the best combination of quality, value and efficiency in their respective market segments.

The magazine’s editor-in-chief, Jim Sharifi, called the EV6 “a top choice with a comfortable and attractive interior.” It also has a “comprehensive set of active safety features,” he added. “Perhaps the biggest selling point, however, is the EV6’s extraordinary range of up to 310 miles,” he said.

North American deliveries of the EV6 reportedly jumped 49 percent in the second month in auto showrooms. In March, the automaker sold 3,100 EV6 models.

“The EV6 has been lauded as a success since its launch earlier this year and represents an important first step toward Kia’s transformative ‘Plan S’ electrification strategy that will deliver 11 all-new electrified models across the world by 2026,” said Steven Center, COO and EVP, Kia America.

One of the winners was the Tesla Model Y for Best Luxury Electric SUV. Lucid Motors also won the Best Luxury Electric Vehicle award for the Lucid Air.

Launched only in March, the Kia EV6 has a long way to go to catch up with the already popular Ioniq 5, which was unveiled in early 2021 and launched later that year.

The Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 — both built on Hyundai’s e-GMP platform — also took home joint world champions at the inaugural Best Cars of the Year award in January.

Meanwhile, amongst the Ioniq 5’s already burgeoning trophy cabinet are a Popular Science award, the German Car of the Year awardGreen SUV of the Year award, and the UK Car of the Year 2022.
