According to New AutoMotive, a total of 11,685 pure electric vehicles were sold in April 2022.
This represents a 10.77% market share, an increase from the 8,809 units sold in April 2021 (6.6% share).
While it is a drop on the number of Battery Electric Vehicles sold in March 2022, when there were more Pure Electric Vehicles sold than in the entirety of 2019, March is usually a month of very high vehicle sales, with around 20% of total annual registrations usually recorded due to it being a new number plate month.
Petrol registrations also fell to 58,400 in April 2022 from 77,500 in April 2021, while 10,300 diesel vehicles were purchased, compared to 18,874 in April 2021.
For a number of months, sales of Battery Electric Vehicles have been higher than sales of diesel cars. Earlier months have seen a bigger gap between the two, but the trend has been continuing.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, in January there were 14,433 battery electric vehicle sales, compared to 6,008 diesel car sales.
For the fourth month in a row, Peterborough DVLA area (which includes Cambridgeshire) registered the most electric vehicle registrations. New AutoMotive’s data showed that 40% of all cars sold in the area were electric.
The area of Maidstone, including all of Kent, was second place with 38%, while Oxfordshire came in third (32%).
New AutoMotive was co-founded by Ben Nelmes, and his job is to create policy. He says that while the slow growth in the United Kingdom is good, it needs to be faster.
“Ministers should use every tool in the box to support those who are most dependent on their cars and drive the most miles to be first in line to get an electric car – that is how we’ll end our reliance on Russian diesel, help those hit hardest by rising fuel prices and meet our net zero targets.”
