It costs four cents less per mile to operate an Electric Vehicle than a gas-powered car, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

The primary motivating factor for switching to an electric vehicle is access to inexpensive home charging.

The main motivation for current Electric Vehicle drivers is the environment and air quality, while the primary motivation for Electric Vehicle aspirants is savings.

A survey of more than 8,000 consumers who own or plan to buy an electric vehicle shows they are very satisfied with zero-emission vehicles, according to a new consumer survey.

90% of respondents said they are very or very likely to buy an electric car as their next car. While the primary motivation for current Electric Vehicle drivers is the environment and air quality, the primary motivation for Electric Vehicle aspirants is economy. The survey found that the most important economic driver behind the switch to electric vehicles is access to low-cost charging options at home.

The survey came a day after California gasoline prices hit record highs. The average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in the state is now $5.45, according to the website GasBuddy.com. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, an electric car costs 4 cents per mile less than a gasoline car, which equates to a saving of $8,000 over the life of the car.

“The electric vehicle market is growing dramatically as more consumers make changes,” said Plug In America executive director Joel Levin in a statement. “As we move from early adoption Phase into the mass market, everyone involved, from government agencies to private companies to nonprofits, must ensure that the transition for these consumers is as smooth as possible so that we can realize the many values of clean electric vehicles.”

The survey, now in its second year, aims to provide insights that can improve the customer experience in electric vehicles. While 80 percent of respondents said they were satisfied with finding the information they needed to buy or lease an electric vehicle, cold-weather performance was the most important missing detail.

Electric car drivers also say salespeople don’t know the cars as well as they would like, an issue which persists in the UK too. Only 15 percent rated the knowledge of their Electric Vehicle salespeople as “very high.” Electric vehicle owners are also dissatisfied with public charging infrastructure; they cite too few charging stations and defective or non-functioning chargers as major problems.

California is the largest electric vehicle market in the United States, accounting for 50% of its sales. Electric vehicles have a larger market share in the state, growing from 8 percent in 2020 to 12 percent in 2021, according to nonprofit Veloz.

Meanwhile in the UK……

More than two-thirds of UK car buyers are considering buying an electric vehicle, according to a new survey of motorists.

About 67 percent of the 2,000 drivers YouGov surveyed on behalf of Bridgestone Tires said they were considering electric vehicles, eventually replacing their gasoline- or diesel-powered models.

That’s a significant increase from previous similar surveys, where another YouGov survey last October for consumer group The Motor Ombudsman showed 61 percent of drivers would opt for an electric car in the future, compared with 18,000 surveyed in 2020 by the Automobile Association where 47% of drivers confirmed that they would consider switching.

The steady increase is likely due to a number of factors, including more electric vehicles on the market and the approaching government ban on the sale of gasoline and diesel vehicles in 2030.

Bridgestone said other factors that indicate an enhanced ownership experience may come into play. About 56% of respondents said they would see environmental benefits from switching to EVs, while 64% said EVs would provide a better driving experience than their Internal Combustion Engine cars.

Running costs are the main driver for drivers, with 47% of respondents telling Bridgestone they look forward to saving fuel by charging rather than using gasoline or diesel.
