Polestar’s Super Bowl ad appears to target Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Volkswagen.
Polestar appeared to let rip at Tesla CEO Elon Musk and German automaker Volkswagen in an ad for Tesla’s electric sedan that aired during the Super Bowl live broadcast on Sunday.
The electric car startup’s 30-second “No Compromise” ad features a close-up of the Polestar 2 and dramatic background music. The ad included phrases such as “no dirty secrets,” “no empty promises,” and “no greenwashing.”
Specifically, the ad appeared to point to Musk with a “No Mars Conquest” message. Other publications, including CNBC and The Verge, have also covered the Polestar ad.
The billionaire Tesla boss is also the CEO of rocket maker SpaceX. He talked about the goal of sending humans to Mars and building a self-sufficient community there. He plans to land humans on the Red Planet by 2026, transported by SpaceX’s spaceship rocket.
The Swedish also attacked Volkswagen with a “No Dieselgate” message, referring to the automaker’s 2015 emissions scandal that found it used software to enable its diesel engines to pass emissions tests.
“We created the ad to showcase our uncompromising stance on Polestar,” a company spokesperson said.
“We believe in our design language, our commitment to sustainability and the performance of our cars ‘without compromise’, and we want to share that philosophy with this ad.”
UK prices start at £49,000, North American prices start at $49,000 and European prices start at €59,000.
Polestar is a Swedish car brand founded in 1996 by Volvo Cars partner Flash/Polestar Racing and acquired by Volvo in 2015, which in turn was acquired by Geely in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China in 2010.
It is headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, and super efficient vehicle production takes place in China. The company develops high-performance electric vehicles and provides performance hardware upgrades and engine software optimizations for Volvo models through its Polestar Engineered division.
Polestar takes its name from the STCC Polestar Racing Team, which was renamed Polestar Performance AB, and was acquired by Volvo Cars in July 2015. The team was renamed Cyan Racing and maintained close ties with Volvo and Geely, the latter later focusing on Polestar’s sister brand Lynk & Co.
In June 2017, Volvo announced that Polestar would start producing high-end electric cars under its own name and logo. The company also acts as Volvo Cars’ innovation lab, developing more experimental designs and technologies.
In September 2021, Polestar announced its intention to go public through a business combination agreement with US special purpose company Gores Guggenheim Inc.
The origins of the company can be traced back to the founding of Flash Engineering in 1996, a Swedish racing team competing in the Swedish Touring Car Championship (STCC). The team was later sold and renamed Polestar Racing, and in the late 2000s began developing its own racing Volvo. In 2009, under the Polestar Performance brand, the brand became Volvo’s official partner for retrofitting existing models. Volvo eventually acquired the company and brand in July 2015, offering Polestar-enhanced models directly from dealerships.
Polestar has also produced prototype cars, with the first being the C30 Polestar Performance Concept Prototype (2010.
The Volvo S60 Polestar Concept is the successor to the 508-horsepower C30 launched in June 2012 with a revised T6 engine. The car sprints from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of over 300 km/h (190 mph). Motor Trend tested the car at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, breaking the four-door lap record and matching the lap time of the Audi R8.
