The rapid development of electric solutions for heavy duty vehicles includes the fast advancement of battery technology in respect of energy storage capacity per kg. Charging time, charging cycles and economics per kg are improving rapidly. This means these solutions will become more cost effective, primarily in repetitive and predictable applications. They will gradually overtake Scania’s industry-leading fossil and biofuel powered solutions in most transport applications.

The company has launched an all-electric HGV truck and a plug-in hybrid HGV truck. In a few years, Scania plans to launch a long-distance electric HGV truck, which will be able to carry a total weight of 40 tons in 4.5 hours and be quickly charged during the 45-minute mandatory rest period of the driver.

By 2025, Scania expects that electric vehicles will account for about 10% of total sales in Europe, and by 2030, it is expected that electric vehicles will account for 50% of our total sales.

Heavy Goods Vehicle maker Scania has invested in hydrogen technology and is currently the only heavy-duty vehicle manufacturer that operates vehicles with customers. Engineers have gained valuable insights from these early tests and will continue to work hard. However, the use of hydrogen for such applications in the future will be limited because the renewable electricity required to power hydrogen HGV trucks is three times that of battery-electric trucks. A large amount of energy is lost in the process of production, distribution and conversion back to electricity.

Repairs and maintenance also need to be considered. The cost of a hydrogen-powered car will be higher than that of a pure electric car because its systems are more complex, such as extensive air and cooling systems. In addition, hydrogen is a volatile gas and requires more maintenance to ensure safety.

However, hydrogen is a promising energy carrier; a good method for long-term energy storage, if produced in an environmentally friendly manner, will play an important role in decarbonization. Scania looks forward to purchasing non-fossil-free steel for its HGV trucks, as hydrogen will play a greater role in multiple industries.

Stationary fuel cells are an important part of the charging system. This kind of solution is especially promising in areas rich in renewable energy and in rural areas far from the main grid.

Committed to more electric products Scania’s science-based climate goals will enable the company to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from its own operations by 50% by 2025, and reduce customer vehicle emissions by 20% during the same period. In order to achieve these far-reaching goals, Scania will focus on the oil well wheel, which is more stringent than many of the upcoming legislation and regulations centered on the fuel tank to the wheel.

The company promises to launch at least one new electric product every year in the field of passenger cars and HGV trucks. At the same time, society’s investment in pure electric vehicle infrastructure remains a priority.
