As consumers increasingly seek more environmentally friendly modes of transportation, sales of electric vehicles have doubled, which drove the first increase in new car sales in the UK in November in four months.
Nearly 22,000 pure electric vehicles were registered in November, more than doubling the 10,345 registered in the same month last year, and the share of pure electric vehicles in total sales climbed to 19%.
The boom in electric vehicle sales drove the overall sales of new vehicles to 115,706 in November, a year-on-year increase of 1.7%. Although this growth is a welcome boost for the auto industry, sales have fallen by nearly one-third compared to pre-pandemic levels.
SMMT said that the global shortage of semiconductors, the “brain” chips of all electronic devices and new cars, continues to hinder the production of new cars.
The sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles also increased by 40% year-on-year to 10,796 units, which means that 28% of the cars sold in November can achieve zero-emission driving. At the same time, sales of diesel vehicles continued to decline, down 63% year-on-year, while sales of new gasoline vehicles fell 10%
Due to the doubling of Electric Vehicles the SMMT said that the ratio of electric vehicles to each public charger has reached 16 to 1. Incredibly so far this year, for every 52 plug-in cars registered, only one new charger has been installed.
Last month, the competition regulator received a promise from the charging station operator Electric Highway to terminate the exclusive rights contracts with the three major British highway services-Moto, Extra and Roadchef-starting in 2026, which will Provide more options for electric car drivers.
So far this year, 1.53 million new cars have been registered, an increase of 2.7% year-on-year, but 31% lower than the average level of the five years before the epidemic. Compared with corporate or fleet purchases, the number of cars sold to the public in November increased by 42% year-on-year to 62,600 units.
